Rock The Vote Action Fund Urges Passage of H.R. 8,
the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019
WASHINGTON — Rock The Vote Action Fund President and Executive Director Carolyn DeWitt released the following statement on the introduction of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019:
“For too long, we have seen too many people, often young people with bright futures, gun downed by senseless acts of gun violence. This past year, young people across our nation led a blaring and relentless charge in the streets and at the ballot box that enough is enough. Learning and building on past efforts, they actively organized a movement across demographics, geographies and socio-economic classes to demand action on gun violence.
With the introduction of H.R 8 the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, the new House of Representatives is hearing their call. This legislation closes dangerous loopholes and requires universal background checks on the sale of all firearms. It is a critical first step to curbing the violence that harms so many in our communities where we should feel safe; our schools, our movie theaters, our sidewalks, our places of worship.
Universal background checks are supported by the vast majority of Americans, young and old, Democrats and Republicans. And we know those universal background checks will save lives.
Young people made the introduction of this legislation possible. We urge Congress to pass and the President to sign this life-saving bill immediately.”
